IPL 2021: Bookies employed cleaner of Arun Jaitley stadium for pitch-siding in a game

The 14th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), which got suspended midway, has witnessed corrupt practices in its second leg, particulary in Delhi as bookies employed a cleaner at the Arun Jaitley stadium for doing ‘pitch-siding’.

Notably, pitch-siding, which is also known as court-siding, is used for ball-to-ball betting.

The new modus operandi was observed during an IPL game in Delhi where an accredited cleaner was using the time lag between actual match action and live TV coverage to help in pitch siding, which is the practice of transmitting information from the sporting venue for the purpose of gambling or betting.

BCCI Anti-Corruption Unit chief Shabbir Hussain Shekhadam Khandwawala has said that one of his officer had caught a person and handed over his details to Delhi Police. However, the offender managed to flee leaving behind his two mobile phones and some other details.

The ACU chief also asserted that they have all the details of the person and he would be nabbed within a day or two.

Reportedly, the offender had the IPL accreditation card which all the class IV staff are given during the tournament.
