IPL Title Sponsorship bid: Tata Group, Patanjali join race

TataGroup is emerging as a strong contender for the Indian Premier League 2020 title sponsorship rights despite joining the race late.

The five-way tussle for the hottest sponsorship property of Indian sports will also see a battle between two leading e-learning players – Byju’s and Unacadmy.

Contrary to belief, Baba Ramdev’s Patanjali Group too has submitted an expression of interest.

The other bidder in the fray is India’s biggest mobile telephone network Reliance Jio.

According to market sources, Tata Group has already in principle confirmed interest to IPL Chief Executive Hemang Amin. Unacademy also does not want to let the opportunity slip away. The e-education brand has already entered a long-term deal as an “Official Partner” for the IPL.

If Tata wins the bid, as expected, brand Tata Medical and Diagnostics may integrate with the IPL logo this year. The Tata Group division is also creating the biosecure bubble for the IPL in the UAE.

The IPL title sponsorship rights have come up for grabs after the BCCI and Vivo have decided to pause their deal for a year. The Chinese mobile phone brand was offering ₹ 440 crores for the IPL title.

The BCCI is feared to suffer up to a 50% deficit in a bargain to find a replacement. The winning bid will be announced on August 18.
