North Korea to skip Tokyo Olympics due to Covid-19

North Korea has reportedly decided to skip this year’s Tokyo Olympic Games because of the coronavirus pandemic.

According to the website ‘Sport in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea’, which reports on sports in North Korea, the decision to skip the showpiece event by the Pyongyang’s Olympic Committee was made on March 25.

The committee reportedly said the decision was to “protect our athletes from the global health crisis” caused by the coronavirus.

However, there was no official confirmation from the North Korea authorities.

On the other hand, Japanese Olympic Minister Tamayo Marukawa told reporters that she was still confirming the details and couldn’t immediately comment on the matter.

Japan’s Olympic Committee said that North Korea has not yet notified it that it wouldn’t participate in the Tokyo Olympics.

Significantly, North Korea is one of the few nations which has not reported a single coronavirus case so far however,. many assume that the virus is present there.

The Tokyo Olympics, which was postponed last year due to the pandemic, are due to start on July 23.
