Swiss Open: Sindhu, Srikanth, Jayaram, Rankireddy-Ponnappa in quarters

It was a great day for India at the ongoing Swiss Open Super 300 badminton tournament as ace shuttlers PV Sindhu, Kidambi Srikanth, Ajay Jayaram and the mixed doubles pair comprising Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Ashwini Ponnappa made their way to the quarter-finals of the tournament.

Sindhu, seeded seventh in the tournament, progressed to the women’s singles quarter-finals with a 21-13, 21-14 win over American Iris Wang in just 35 minutes.

PV Sindhu will now take on Thailand’s Busanan Ongbamrungphan in the quarter-finals on Friday.

Earlier in the day, Srikanth too, advanced to the quarters of the ongoing tournament after he defeated France’s Thomas Rouxel.

Srikanth beat Rouxel 21-10, 14-21, 21-14 in the contest lasting for 52 minutes.

He will now be up against Thailand’s sixth seed Kantaphon Wangcharoen or Netherlands’ Mark Caljouw, who had earlier defeated H.S. Prannoy.

Meanwhile, the Indian mixed doubles pair comprising Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Ashwini Ponnappa also entered the quarter-finals after beating Indonesia’s Rinov Rivaldy and Pitha Haningtyas Mentari 21-18, 21-16 in the 38-minute affair.

Also, Ajay Jayaram registered a 21-18 17-21 21-13 win over Rasmus Gemke of Denmark in three games to reach enter the quarters.

On the other hand, Sourabh Verma’s campaign in the tournament came to an end as he suffered a 17-21, 14-21 defeat to Thailand’s eighth seed Kunlavut Vitidsarn.
