18 new coronavirus cases in the Premier League, highest in a week

The Premier League conducted their latest round of Covid-19 Tests between Dec 21-27 on 1479 players and stuff and 18 individuals tested positive for the virus. This is the highest number of cases in a week this season, the Premier League said on Tuesday.

131 individuals have tested positive for the coronavirus in the English top-flight in 17 rounds of testing since the beginning of the new season.

The positive players will now isolate themselves for 10 days. The league stayed away from naming the players or their clubs.

Manchester City striker Gabriel Jesus and defender Kyle Walker tested positive a few days back and on Monday, the club named several other positive cases in their squad. The outbreak in the City camp forced the league to postpone their match against Everton.

City’s next fixture against Chelsea is also in doubt and the club has closed their training ground as a precautionary measure. Chelsea boss Frank Lampard said that the match won’t take place if it is unsafe for both teams.

This is not the first time a match has been postponed due to the coronavirus this season. Newcastle United saw their match against Aston Villa called off earlier this season after an outbreak in the Magpies camp.

Arsenal’s Gabriel will also miss the next two matches after testing positive for the virus.

More than 2.3 million confirmed Covid-19 cases and 71,000 deaths have been recorded in the United Kingdom. News about a new highly infectious coronavirus strain in the UK forced countries across the globe to shut their borders to the country.
