BCCI may sacrifice England series to accommodate IPL

The Board of Control for Cricket in India has still not given up on the hope to host the Indian Premier League 2020. Despite looming Coronavirus concerns, the board is reportedly exploring possibilities for a truncated or full IPL Season in September – either behind closed doors in India or in Dubai.

The full season of the IPL can also still be possible if the International Cricket Council takes a call to defer the ICC T20 World Cup in Australia to early next year. The league, if happens in September, will come at the cost of India’s home series against England, who are scheduled to visit for three One Day Internationals and as many T20 Internationals.

English publication Daily Mail has reported that “Sportsmail (sports section of the publication) understands that while the ECB have not been involved directly in talks with the Board of Control for Cricket in India they are aware of the various contingencies being drawn up”.

While the officials in the BCCI are silent on the possibility of an IPL this year, the Sportsmail has reported that the “options being explored to hold a truncated version of world cricket’s most lucrative domestic competition in September either in India or Dubai”.

Even if the England tour of India this winter is deferred or compromised, a number of England players will be seen in action in the IPL 2020.

The EBC has, however, postponed its ambitious limited overs professional league – The Hundred. No new dates are revealed as of now.

The ECB on April 30 had announced that no professional cricket will be played in England and Wales till July 1 this year.
The England cricket board is, meanwhile, is providing a £61 million package to help cricket withstand the financial impact of COVID-19. The financial assistance is being offered at every level of the game ranging from counties and boards to clubs.
