IOC Session approves inclusion of cricket in Los Angeles 2028 Olympics

In a delighting news for cricket fans across the globe, the sports’ T20 format will mark a return to the Olympics for the first time since 1932 as the Los Angeles edition will induct it in the showpiece event in 2028.

On Monday, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) gave its final approval for the inclusion of T20 cricket as an additional sport in the 2028 Olympics. The IOC’s 141st session, held in Mumbai, gave unanimous approval for the inclusion of five additional sports which are cricket, squash, baseball and softball, flag football and lacrosse.

Notably, just a couple out of the 99 members, which gathered in Mumbai for the IOC Session, opposed the move while two more abstained from voting, making it a near-unanimous approval for the package to be included in the 2028 Olympics.

The session was informed that the IOC’s Sports Programme Commission will sit down with the International Federation of the additional sports and the traditional sports to bring down the number.
