IPL 2021 Auction: Rules franchises need to follow

With just a day left for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 auction, all the eight the franchises have prepared their personal shortlists for the players they wish to rope in for the upcoming season of the lucrative league.

However, the franchises have certain rules to follow during the auction.

Rule No. 1: No franchise will be allowed to buy a player beyond their purse balance. A total of INR 85 crore were allotted to each franchise to purchase players. KXIP have a whopping Rs, 53.2 crore left in their purse to spend on players. Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have the least money in purse (Rs. 10.75 crore).

Rule No. 2: From the total money allotted to be spent (Rs 85 crore), each franchise has to spend at least 75% of the amount. In a case where a franchise completes its squad in 70% of the money, the remaining 5% of the balance will directly go to the BCCI. KXIP, RCB, and RR, hence, are expected to be among those signing big-money players in the auction.

Rule No. 3: The option of the Right to Match (RTM) card will not be available to franchises which means they would not be able to match other franchises’ bids and re-sign the players they had released ahead of this auction. To re-sign a released player, hence, franchises would need to be involved in the bidding war.

Rule No. 4: Both minimum and maximum capping has been set over squad strength by the BCCI. The number of players in each squad cannot exceed 25 at any condition, while the minimum number of players in each squad has to be 18. Virat Kohli’s RCB have the most number of vacant slots in this auction at 13 while David Warner’s SRH have the least at 3.

Rule No. 5: Capping has also been set by the BCCI over the signing of Indian and overseas talent. Each franchise can have a maximum of 25 Indian players and a minimum of 17 Indian players. Similarly, each franchise can have a maximum of 8 international players in the squad but there’s no capping on the lower-limit.

It is noteworthy that the IPL 2021 auction will not be a mega-auction and the mega auction will only take place for the 2022 season.
