Kusal Mendis taken to hospital after century against Pakistan

Sri Lanka wicketkeeper-batter Kusal Mendis was taken to a hospital in Hyderabad after suffering cramps following his fantastic knock against Pakistan in the ongoing ICC ODI World Cup ongoing match played at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Tuesday.

“Kusal Mendis was taken to the hospital after the player suffered cramps upon returning from the field after his brilliant knock of 122 runs from 77 balls in the ongoing game vs. Pakistan,” Sri Lanka cricket said in a statement.

Dushan Hemantha replaced Mendis in the field, while Sadeera Samarawickrama took over the wicketkeeping role in Mendis’ absence.

Notably, Mendis starred with the bat for the islanders for the second successive game as he slammed a majestic hundred to help his side post a massive total of 344/9 in the allotted 50 overs.

Sri Lanka, riding on centuries from Mendis and Samarawickrama (108), to post a mammoth 344 runs in the first innings before Pakistan overhauled the target in 48.2 overs.

The Green Brigade faced early hiccups as it lost two pivotal wickets during the powerplay, courtesy of Dilshan Madushanka’s relentless bowling. However, Pakistan showcased resilience and registered a spirited comeback to seal a memorable victory in style.

Pakistan’s Md Rizwan and opener Abdullah Shafique were the chief architect behind Pakistan’s fantastic win with knocks of 113 and 131 runs respectively.
