More 22 new athletes added to Indian contingent for Hangzhou Asian Games

The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS) has released a revised list of the Indian contingent for the upcoming Asian Games, slated to be held in Hangzhou, China from September 23.

With the addition of another 22 athletes, the total strength has now reached to 655.

Moreover, the updated list has now inducted the sport of Modern Pentathlon which increases India’s participation to a total of 39 sporting disciplines at the showpiece event.

The Indian contingent list now stands at 921 members of which 655 are athletes while the remaining 260 are coaches and support staff.

Notably, it is India’s largest contingent for the Asian Games.

As per reports, members of the Indian contingent have already started reaching Hangzhou. The boxing, sailing and rowing teams had landed in China last week and have begun their preparations.

Earlier, the MYAS had sanctioned 634 athletes across 38 sporting disciplines for participation in the event, who met the set selection criteria, against the 850 athletes recommended by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA).

In the 2018 Asian Games, as many as 572 athletes had participated where India returned with 70 medals including 16 gold.
