Ramesh Powar back as chief coach of Indian women’s cricket team

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Thursday appointed former Indian cricketer Ramesh Powar as the chief coach of India senior women’s team.

A three-member Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), comprising Madan Lal, Sulakshana Naik and RP Singh, had interviewed the applicants and finally agreed on Ramesh Powar’s candidature. Notably, the BCCI had advertised for the post and received more than 35 applications.

After the developement, Powar, 42, will replace WV Raman, who was appointed the head coach in December 2018.

Significantly, it was during Raman’s tenure when the Indian eves managed to reach the finals of the T20 World Cup 2020 but ended up losing the summit clash to Australia.

Powar had represented India in couple of Tests and 31 ODIs.

After retiring from the game, Powar, who is an ECB Level 2 certified coach, took up cricket coaching.

Earlier between July-November 2018, Powar had served as the head coach of the Indian women’s team.

Now, Powar’s first assignment as the cheif coach will be a full-fledged tour of the UK where India will play its first Test in seven years against hosts England from June 16.
