Robert Lewandowski Tops Messi, Ronaldo to win FIFA Best Men’s Player award

Bayern Munich forward Robert Lewandowski won the biggest award of his career on Thursday as he was named The Best FIFA Men’s Player 2020. The 32-year-old saw off competition from last year’s winner Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo to bag the prestigious title.

Lewandowski scored a whopping 55 goals in the season which saw Bayern Munich win the German League, cup double, and the Champions League. The Poland skipper also led his country to Euro 2020 qualification and was named the 2019-20 UEFA Men’s Player of the Year in October.

Lewandowski, who earned 52 voting points, joined Luka Modric, the winner of the award in 2018 as the only players to deny Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo the prize in the last 13 years.

“It’s and incredible feeling” said Lewandowski, who was shortlisted for the first time in his life.

“Today, I am among them. It means I have always done the right things in my life.” he added.

Manchester City full back and a former Champions League winner with Lyon, Lucy Bronze, won the women’s best player award. With her achievement, she became the first English woman to bag the honor.

Jurgen Klopp who guided Liverpool to their first Premier League title in 30 years was named The Best Men’s coach for the second successive year. German international and Bayern Munich’s Manuel Neuer won The Best FIFA Men’s Goalkeeper. Tottenham Hotspur’s Son Heung-Min won the Puskas award for his individual brilliance in a stunning goal against Burnley last December.

FIFA hosted the virtual ceremony in Zurich.
