Cristiano Ronaldo becomes first individual to gain 250 million Instagram followers

Juventus star Cristiano Ronaldo kicked-off 2021 in the perfect manner as he guided his team to a 4-1 victory against Udinese. Playing at home, the number 7 bagged a brace in the match which saw him overtake Brazilian legend Pele’s official goals tally of 757 goals. With 758 goals to his name, Ronaldo is now football’s second-highest goalscorer ever, one short of Josef Bican at the top spot.

However, the Portuguese forward achieved another record feat over the weekend, this time off the field. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner, who was already the most followed personality on Instagram, became the first individual to gain 250 million followers on the platform.

The combined following of the 20 English Premier League clubs come up to 150 million, which is at least 100 million short of Ronaldo’s figure. Manchester United is the Premier League club with the highest number of Instagram followers (38.5 million).

It is also to be noted that Ronaldo’s post on Argentine legend Diego Maradona’s demise collected a whopping 19.7 million likes. According to a Forbes report, the former Manchester United and Real Madrid superstar earns a staggering $1 million per Instagram post.
