The much-awaited ICC ODI World Cup 2023 is all set to begin with the defending champions England taking on the 2019 World Cup runners-up New Zealand in the tournament opener on October 5 at the world’s largest stadium; Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

The Three Lions will be coming into the contest on the back of a series win over New Zealand recently at home and followed it up with warm-up win over minnows Bangladesh in Guwahati.

In the recent ODI series between the two teams, batter Dawid Malan topped the batting charts after amassing 277 runs in three matches, averaging 92.33 while star all-rounder Ben Stokes accumulated 235 runs at an average of 78.33 in which he also played a fantastic 182-run knock in one of the affairs, recording the highest score by an English batter in ODIs.

Stokes however, is most likely to miss the game with a hip niggle.

On the other side, New Zealand will be heading into the opener on the back of a 2-0 win against Bangladesh before defeating South Africa and Pakistan in the warm-up games.

Daryl Mitchell has been their go-to batter innthe ongoing year as he had so far amassed 652 runs from 16 innings at an average of 43.46 with three tons to his name while Will Young has amassed 578 runs from 14 innings at an average of 44.46.

While the major part of India are witnessing showers, there is no threat of rain in Ahmedabad on Thursday (October 5) as there is a forecast for a very warm day with a maximum temperature of 36 degree Celcius in the day, which could fall to 28 degress in the night.

Dew could once again be a crucial factor as it is expected to arrive late in the evening during the second innings. As per reports, the ground has witnessed dew on the outfield in the last few days and the ground staff will use the ASPA80 anti-dew spray on the morning of the match if needed.

There are three kinds of pitches at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad – black soil, red soil and a mixture of both of them. While the black soil wickets produces more bounce and allowes good strokeplay, the red soil pitches, on the other hand, are generally very dry and assist the slower bowlers or spinners as the match progresses.

The third one with the mixture of both is expected to be even and it will be known before the match on which pitch the ENG vs NZ match will be played.
