Team India, support staff return negative results in latest Covid-19 tests

Playing members of the Indian cricket team and support staff underwent Covid-19 Tests on Sunday and have all returned negative results, the BCCI said on Monday.

“Playing members of the Indian Cricket Team and support staff underwent an RT-PCR Test for COVID-19 on January 3, 2021. All tests have returned negative results,” the BCCI said in a short statement.

The tests were conducted ahead of the scheduled Third Test on January 7. Team India reached Syndey on Monday as planned.

A couple of days back, Indian players Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Risabh Pant, Navdeep Saini, and Prithvi Shaw were spotted at an indoor restaurant in Melbourne. The video was posted by a fan on Twitter and the players were immediately placed in isolation.

The incident initiated a joint investigation by Cricket Australia and the BCCI to determine whether the Test stars breached bio-security protocol for the series. The bio-security protocols set by CA allow players to sit outside restaurants but don’t let them dine inside. However, the players stated that they went in because it was drizzling outside.

The five cricketers were given permission to train and travel with the team to Sydney. According to sources, they have also been cleared to take part in the match that is to be played at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

It is believed that the visitors are not happy with the controversy created and are not amused with the way CA has handled the issue so far.
