Tokyo Olympics likely to exclude foreign spectators, says report

If reports are to be believed, the Japanese government is planning to stop spectators from abroad to attend the upcoming Tokyo Olympics as it feels that they will spread the coronavisrus.

A final call would be made later this month after the Japanese government make talks with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and other parties involved in the showpiece event, the Mainichi newspaper has reported.

The report came as the local organising committee was set to host a meeting on Wednesday with officials from the IOC, the International Paralympic Committee, and the Tokyo and national governments.

ANother report in Yomiuri newspaper poll has showed that 91 per cent of Japanese people want spectators kept to a minimum limit or not allowed at all.

The online poll, which was conducted between January 18 and February 2, has that 70 per cent of people said they were “interested in the Olympics”, but 58 per cent said they did not want them to be held this year because of fears over COVID-19.

Significantly, the Tokyo Olympics was postponed last year because of the pandemic.

It was later rescheduled to take place this year from July 23.
